Docs Who Rock

When the question “Is there a doctor in the house?” is asked Oct. 19 at E.J. Thomas Hall, watch out for the roar. That’s when United Way of Summit County will host its 10th annual Docs Who Rock physician talent show, meaning there will be several doctors taking to the stage and scores more cheering them on from the audience.

'Advance Akron' launched

The Greater Akron Chamber's 2008 meeting started out Wednesday evening with rhythm and voice before a crowd of about 800.


The University of Akron's marching band led chamber leaders to the podium at the John S. Knight Center, the Akron police and fire department's color guard presented flags and local recording artist Rachel Roberts sang the national anthem.

The Devo Adventure

Rosavelt's Chris Allen opened the show with a short acoustic set, followed by the Black Keys (Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney), who came out and did what they always do: they brought the big, industrial sized can of Rubber City Whoop-Ass. While Chrissie Hynde and Rachel Roberts were performing, I went backstage to interview Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh. I listened as he talked to the guy from Rolling Stone, who kept asking for thoughts on politics and Obama. When it was my turn, Mark seemed happy to change the subject and talk about music. I asked him to compare the show they were about to perform with their last Akron show in 1978, and what the club scene was like for them back then: “There's gonna be a lot of people that were here at the last show – or their kids. (laughs) It'll be a different audience. The band will be somewhat different but we will retain some of the songs from that show, and the look is gonna be quite similar.

Rachel Roberts is currently collaborating with songwriter Ryan Beke, and rechristening their band as SEXIS SIXES. The band consists of drummer Anne Lillis, guitarist and pianist Ryan Beke, and bassist Joe Golden. This power pop group is a vintage mixture of retro pop, soul and funk. It has a sultry lounge appeal, sure to ease the mood and the groove.
